OVERVIEW
MHS Librarian! will allow users to request information from one
MHS site to be forwarded to them at another. MHS Librarian! is
a gateway process that is run on the MHS Server. When mail is
received by the gateway, MHS Librarian! will generate a reply
message to the originator with the requested file attached.
Requests are made by placing a keyword in the subject line of
the message that you address to the library. A list of
available files can be requested by sending a message to MHS
Librarian! with the keyword of INDEX.
System administrators can also configure MHS Librarian! so that
select users can request files or directory listings other than
those in the index. This is useful for accessing files you
accidentally left at work or other location. Security for this
level of access is provided by the included PASSWORD.EXE
program, your own password program, or a password data file that
you create. The PASSWORD.EXE program that ships with MHS
Librarian! can accept a variable you chose that gets merged with
it's password to insure a unique password, and will generate a
new password every day of operation.
REQUIREMENTS
MHS Librarian! requires Novell NetWare MHS (Network or Personal)
version 1.5 or greater. (The 30-day trial version also requires
a Novell NetWare network.)
Your e-mail system should be capable of delivering mail using
MHS.
Before you can install or use MHS Librarian!, you must have your
MHS Server and e-mail system operational.
INSTALLING MHS LIBRARIAN!
MHS Librarian! runs as an MHS gateway process named LIBRARY.
1) Take your MHS server off-line by exiting from MHS on your
MHS mail server.
2) MHS Librarian comes in 30 Day Evaluation or Commercial
versions. Execute the appropriate utility for the version
that you have:
A) If you are installing the 30 Day Evaluation version, execute
LB30DAY.EXE from the distribution diskette.
B) If you are installing the commercial version, execute
LBINSTAL.EXE from the distribution diskette.
3) Copy the contents of the distribution diskette into a
directory on system, for example the \MHS\EXE directory.
4) To install the MHS Librarian gateway process, execute
LIBRARY.EXE from the directory that you copied it to.
5) You will need to decide whether or not you want to allow
access to files on on your system that are not defined within
the index. (See: Setting the Password for Non-Index File
Access)
A) If you want to allow non-index access using the included password
program:
Answer YES to the question "Install PASSWORD.EXE?" Library
will copy the supplied PASSWORD.EXE to the gateway directory.
B) If you want to allow non-index access with a fixed password:
Answer NO to the question "Install PASSWORD.EXE?"
C) If you do not want to allow non-index access:
Answer NO to the question "Install PASSWORD.EXE?"
6) Restart your MHS Server.
CONFIGURING MHS LIBRARIAN!
SETTING THE PASSWORD FOR NON-INDEX FILE ACCESS
Before MHS Librarian! processes any requests, it looks to see if
there is a password program installed. This password program
should write the password it creates into a file named
PASSWORD.DAT.
If PASSWORD.EXE exists, Librarian will execute that program. If
the program does not exist, Librarian will then look for a
PASSWORD.DAT file.
The PASSWORD.EXE program that comes with the MHS Librarian!
generates a unique password everyday. Although this is secure,
you can alter the password by giving it a "feed" password that
it will combine with it's own, making the new password even more
unique to your system.
NOTE: If you are using the included password generating program,
you should add a statement in the batch file that runs MHS to
set the feed for the password.
Example: SET LIBPWD=mypassword (where mypassword is the feed)
If you want to create a program that will generate your own
password, it should be installed in the
MHS\MAIL\GATES\LIBRARY\PUBLIC directory, and should write it's
password to a PASSWORD.DAT file in that directory.
If you want to allow access, but use a fixed password, simply
create a PASSWORD.DAT file in the MHS\MAIL\GATES\LIBRARY\PUBLIC
directory. To change the password, simply edit this file.
CREATING THE MHS LIBRARIAN! INDEX
A library index can be created for access by users, identifying
the files that you would like to make available for requests.
The source file for the index is an ASCII file named LIBRARY.DAT
and is stored in the MHS\MAIL\GATES\LIBRARY directory. It
contains the keyword, optional password, description, and the
path and filename for each item. Each keyword in your list can
have a separate password. You can also specify that the file
(or files) be compressed before they are sent.
The file is in the format of:
keyword | Description | DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME.EXE /OPT
or, when password protecting entries:
keyword=password | Description | DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME.EXE /OPT
NOTE: The only option is /ZIP for use when wildcards are used
for multiple files or if you want MHS Librarian! to compress the
file. To use this option, you must have a copy of PKZIP in the
search path for your MHS server.
There are reserved characters for use in this file which allow
you the flexibility to customize the library index listing.
These characters are as follows:
; Indicates this line is a comment in the listing.
: Descriptive line. May be password protected by using
:=Password
! Tells the MHS Librarian! to insert a column header here.
You may password protect this by using !=Password

USING MHS LIBRARIAN!
To use MHS Librarian, you address a message to it, and specify
your requests on the subject line of the message. Requests can
be for help, listings, or files on the remote system. Files may
be requested from a special index, or for specific files that
are not listed in the index. Special requests can also be made
for directories, activity logs, and assistance with non-index
requests.
Addressing the Message
The username for the MHS Librarian! gateway can vary based upon
your installation. For this discussion we will assume that it
is LIBRARY@HOST.
MHS Librarian! assumes that it is to send the information
requested to the return address of the sender of the request.
Example: LIBRARY@HOST
This will generate a message with the requested file attached and address
it to the sender of the request with the FROM: field filled with MHS
Librarian's address.
You can specify that MHS Librarian send the message to another
user by using MHS's extended addressing information in the TO:
field of the message.
Example: LIBRARY@HOST {USERNAME@REMOTE)
This will generate a message with the requested file attached and send it
to USERNAME@REMOTE, with the FROM: field filled with your name.
You can also pass extended address information through to the
remote address.
Example: LIBRARY@HOST {FAX@HOST | /Fax:363-3779;/To:John Madill}
Creates a message addressed to FAX@HOST {/Fax:363-3779;/To:John Madill},
with the FROM: field filled with your name.
MAKING REQUESTS TO MHS LIBRARIAN!
Requesting an Index:
To request that the list of available files be sent to you,
specify INDEX in the subject. If items that are listed in the
index are password protected, and you know the password, you may
request that index by using the command INDEX=PASSWORD in your
subject. (See: Output from Sample LIBRARY.DAT File)
Requesting Files in the Index:
You make your requests by placing the KEYWORD on the subject
line of your message. If an item in the index has been
protected by a password, you make that request by placing the
command KEYWORD=PASSWORD in the subject.
For Files that are not in the index:
System administrators can also configure MHS Librarian! so that
select users can request files or directory listings other than
those in the index. This is useful for accessing files you
accidentally left at work or elsewhere.
You can make only one request per message using this method of
access!
NOTE: If your system uses a password generating program, all
remote users should have a copy of it to calculate the password
each day. To use the included PASSWORD.EXE, enter the command:
PASSWORD mypassword (where mypassword is the feed)
If you have a fixed password, notify all authorized remote users of it.
To request a file that isn't in the index, use
PASSWORD=DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME.EXT as the subject line of your
message. The filename must include the complete path to the
file.
Example: PASSWORD=F:\PUBLIC\INIT.BAT
If you want MHS Librarian! to compress the file, and have a copy
of PKZIP in the search path, you can add the option /ZIP in the
subject.
Example: PASSWORD=F:\PUBLIC\INIT.BAT /ZIP
NOTE: Optionally, with the /ZIP option, you can request multiple
files. This is the only means to get more than one file with
one request.
SPECIAL REQUESTS
Requesting Help
To request that the help file be sent to you, specify HELP in
the subject.
To request help for non-indexed file access, place PASSWORD=HELP
in the subject of the message. You can make only one request
per message using this method!
The help files are named LIBRARY.HLP and LIBADMIN.HLP, and are
located in the MHS\MAIL\GATES\LIBRARY directory. These are
ASCII files that you can customize for your users with an
editor.
Directory Listings
MHS Librarian! will allow you to request a directory of files
for a given directory by specifying the password, path and file
mask on the subject line.
You can make only one request per message using this command!
Example: PASSWORD=F:\SYSTEM\*.EXE /DIR
Sample Output from /DIR Request:

The activity log is a report that shows you what requests have
been made, when they were made, and who made them.
You can make only one request per message using this command!
NOTE: When you request the activity log, the current log file is
deleted.
To request that the Activity Log be sent to you and the Admin
User, specify /LOG in the subject.

NETWORK UTILITIES
-----------------
* I-Queue! - Simplifies network printing and print queue management
in the Novell NetWare environment. From within a small memory
resident pop-up (0 to 2-1/2KB), I-Queue! allows users to easily
change NetWare print queues and modify "capture" parameters.
I-Queue! is compatible with Novell's PRINTCON/PRINTDEF and adds
global PRINTCON support for Novell's own utilities.
Queue management capabilities include: delete/reorder print jobs,
move/copy jobs between queues, and hold/delayed printing.
* CastAway! - A better NetWare broadcast message trap. Get NetWare
message notification (e.g., SEND) without your PC locking up until
you press CTRL-ENTER! Get notified of new messages while in graphics
based applications! All in 0 to 1-1/2KB of conventional memory!
* PopIT! - Gain pop-up access to almost ANY program with less than
2-1/2 KB overhead. Network administrators -- access SYSCON,
RCONSOLE, FCONSOLE and all of your favorite network utilities
without leaving your current application.
* OnCall! - A memory resident "Chat" utility for Novell NetWare,
that runs in between 0 and 2-1/2 KB of workstation memory.
Simple, straightforward, and easy to use.
EXPRESSIT! ELECTRONIC MAIL
--------------------------
* ExpressIT! Electronic Mail - The ExpressIT! Electronic Mail product
family includes the following products:
* ExpressIT! - The network version of ExpressIT!, including
the MHS-compatible DOS version, which runs in less than 2KB of
resident memory.

of ExpressIT! offering native support for the Microsoft Windows
environment, and a wealth of additional features.
* ExpressIT! Remote Windows - A remote version of the Windows
version of ExpressIT! customized for use on stand-alone/remote
PCs. Includes Personal MHS and allows users to send and receive
mail with any MHS based electronic mail system.
A special Windows based MHS configuration utility eliminates the
need to use the MHS Directory Manager.
All versions of ExpressIT! include ExpressIT! Directory Assistance,
facilitating automatic exchange of user directories between ExpressIT!
hosts.
MHS GATEWAYS AND UTILITIES
--------------------------
* MHS Scheduler - An MHS mail agent that provides greater flexibility
in configuring when MHS will connect to a host. On a host-by-host
basis, the MHS administrator can configure different frequencies of
forced connections based on different times of the day, with
separate weekday, weekend, and holiday scheduling possible.
MHS gateways and internetwork connections can also be scheduled.
The companion RunIT! utility simplifies the creation of batch file
gateways...now you can run your tape backup system on your MHS
server.
* MHS Librarian! - An MHS Gateway that allows users to request
information to be forwarded to them at another. Requests are
made by placing a keyword in the "SUBJECT" field of the message
that you address to the library. A list of files may be
requested by sending a message with the keyword of INDEX. The
system Admin can also configure MHS Librarian so that selected
users can request files or directories other than those that
appear in the index. Security is provided by a password program
that generates unique daily passwords, a fixed password, or you
can create your own password utility.
* PageIT! - An MHS gateway connecting MHS-based electronic mail
systems to full text alphanumeric pagers. Once configured,
sending messages to an alphanumeric pager is as simple as
sending a message from your favorite MHS application.
* ForwardIT! - An MHS mail agent for automatically forwarding
MHS based electronic mail messages. ForwardIT! can forward
(or copy) messages addressed to an MHS address to an alternate
address.
ForwardIT! is most useful in the MHS remote e-mail environment.
By remote, we refer to field workers or business travelers who
operate ExpressIT! Remote, or other MHS compatible remote
software, on a PC or laptop to access their electronic mail
from a distant location. Examples could include a salesperson
between sales calls, a business traveler in a hotel room,
or work-at-home scenarios.
Without ForwardIT!, when mail is sent to a recipient's office
address, MHS does not allow for a remote user to dial into the
network and retrieve mail waiting for their office address. Mail
addressed to this office address can only be picked up at the
office.
In order to send a message to the user's MHS remote, the sender
must assume responsibility for sending a copy of the message to
the remote MHS address.
With ForwardIT!, the user leaves a forwarding address at the
office, and while they're out, all messages will be forwarded,
or copied, to their forwarding address, giving users transparent
access to their electronic mail while away from the office.
This forwarding address can be any valid MHS address, including
addresses via MHS gateways.
* MhsQ! - An MHS gateway interface to NetWare print queues.
Messages can be sent via MHS to a NetWare print queue.
This capability can be useful for MHS remote sites and/or
MHS enabled applications for generating printed output
and/or reports.
Sample applications for MhsQ! include generating work orders to
a printer via MHS.
* MHSNotify! - A TSR which runs on the MHS mail server only, and
automatically notifies recipients of new electronic mail
received from remote MHS sites, or across internetwork
connections. An excellent alternative to MHSALERT for
DaVinci e-mail users! (MHSNotify! is bundled with ExpressIT!)
